The sunstone is a key used to unlock Val-El's Fortress of Solitude. It features a modified version of the House of El sigil.

History[]

Season 1[]

"Pilot"[]

Intercepting Seg-El in the street, Adam Strange gave Seg the sunstone. Seg later returned home, showing it to his parents. They offered to hold it for him, as the symbol was outlawed. He agreed, but instead stole it. Walking home late sometime later, a member of Sagitari searched Seg, finding the sunstone. He knocked them down, taking the sunstone. He was quickly found by his mother in a skimmer, which they used to travel to his grandfather's Fortress of Solitude. Arriving there, Seg used the sunstone to unlock the Fortress.[1]

"Hope"[]

During the war between the resistance movement and Voice of Rao/Brainiac, Seg came to Fortress, holding the sunstone when grieving the supposed death of Adam Strange and belief that he will never meet own grandson Kal-El. Var-El noticed and revealed to him that the origin of El's sigil, the same one on the sunstone, comes from the ancient Kryptonian word for hope where the ancestors chose it and defined it for generations, to achieve a great accomplishments not by words, but through the action. Seg later gave the sunstone to Nyssa, telling her that Val shuts down the Fortress and that Nyssa goes to Argo City for safety. When VOR tried to kill Seg, Nyssa put the sunstone on his head, disintegrating him. Seg soon picked up after the real Brainiac arrived to collect Kandor.[2]

Season 2[]

"Light-Years From Home"[]

Seg-El and Brainiac were both trapped in the Phantom Zone after the former saving home planet. Six months later, finding himself in the Phantom Zone, a "hallucination" of Val-El explained to Seg-El that the sunstone could be used as a gateway back into the real world via one of numerous wormholes, as it contains the "harnessed energy of a 10 billion year old yellow sun". After opening a portal, the "hallucination" reshaped into the form of Brainiac, having tricked Seg-El into returning them both to the real world.[3]
